Nadyn's Creole Assignment

CAPE Exam Question
Due Thursday , October 25

1.  Read the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.

Toni:      That girl Zara jus come to de college standoffish. She playing she ain know how to speak we
language. Always talkin like BBC news broadcaster or someting!
Cintra:   You jus jealous dat you ain know to talk so sweet. Dat is why de teachers like to call on she
to speak. Dey want we to follow she example.
Toni:      Not me! I ain changing me language to suit nobody!

a)                  State 2 differing attitudes to Zara’s language in the dialogue. (2 marks)
Two differing attitudes in Zara's language would be the fact that it affected the peers both negatively and positively. Toni took it to be (believes that Standard English is) used by someone, like Zara, who (believes he or she is better than other people) is more stuck up whereas Cintra though it was more refined and standard, a better way to speak. That's  right! The two differring attitudes are positive and negative. Avoid using slangs like 'stuck up'. (1.5)

b)                  List 2 reasons why teachers  want students to speak like Zara. (2 marks)
Zara's way of speaking would be preference (preferred) to teachers. She is considered to be speaking Standard English, a language that is considered to be more accepted globally. Students would then be able to be better writers and produce a higher quality of work that would then enhance their future. Good response! (2 marks)

c)                   Toni says she refuses to change “me language”. State 3 features of her speech that define it as a language. (3 marks)
Toni considered the way she speaks as "me language". Three features of the speech that would define it as a language would be the fact that it identifies her for who she is 'A Caribbean Person', she is considered to be speaking Creole Language. It is spoken by her peers and defines as a Language because it has all the characteristics of a language. It is the system of vocal and written symbols (and grammatical rules) used to communicate ideas, emotions and desires. Good! (3 marks)

d)                  Zara’s described as ‘standoffish’. State 2 ways in which a person’s language affects our evaluation of them.  (2marks)
Zara's described as "standoffish". A person's language may affect our evaluation of them. It begins with a description of the social basis of language and the role in which it plays in thoughts and perception, because language plays such an essential role in the evaluation process it would condition markedly different ways of seeing the world. Based on the language one uses persons preconceived ideas or expectations may create mental blockage.
We might believe Zara is from the upper class of society since it is assumed only the affluent people in society speak Standard English.
We might also assume she is also educated since Standard English is the accepted language of the education system (schools).

e)                  What 2 reasons might there be for Zara’s constant use of ‘BBC’ English? (2 marks)

Two reasons why Zara's use of constant "BBC English" would be the fact that Zara was raised in a territory that spoke refined/ standard English and it could also be a way to intimidate others to have them believe that she is of higher standards. (2 marks)

f)                   Give 2 historical factors influence the way language is used in your territory. (2 marks)
  Two historical factors that influence the way language is used in my territory;
(1) The (Many) residents are Dominican descendants who now reside in Antigua so the way in which they converse would be most times in their native language "French Creole" a language that differentiates them from others in Antigua. Dominica was once colonised by the French and this is why they speak patois today which is known as Creole French.

(2) Dialect (Creole English) is the #1 (number one) language used. It is another form of the English Language, although we are Caribbean people the way in which we speak defines us as Antiguan. The choice and Pronunciation of words are different.

Historical factors should be related to history. For example, what we know as dialect, Creole English or broken English resulted from slavery. Because the slaves could not speak the standard English so they tried to imitate the whites and mixed some of the African with the standard English in order to communicate.
Do some more reading!

                                                                                                   Total (13 marks)
